![]() It is amusing to note however that the voice of Optimus Prime himself, Peter Cullen, also performed on Challenge of the Gobots. When it came to the toys themselves the character designs were less appealing and fun for kids, and on the cartoon, the personas less clearly defined than on Transformers - no GoBot stood out like Bumblebee or Starscream, and instead of interesting and unique voices for the characters a la Transformers, Challenge of the GoBots had nearly uniform voices for the two different robot factions, with the Renegades distinguished by their more computer-like, mechanical sounding tone. In Cy-Kill's backstory, he was originally a Guardian and friend to Leader-1, but really, if you're named Cy-Kill, how can you not eventually turn evil? It's not like either cartoon is all that great a television series when viewed now, but there was just something innately cool and fun about Transformers that GoBots didn't equal. See, he changed into a cycle, and, well, you can guess the other part. Because he's the leader… and he's number 1? And instead of the diabolical Megatron, GoBots gave us Cy-Kill. Where Transformers offered the instantly iconic and heroic Autobot leader Optimus Prime, Challenge of the GoBots's good guy leader was named… Leader-1. Why was that? Most likely it came down to the characters. Despite being relatively successful at the time, neither the GoBots toy line or cartoon could equal the popularity of Transformers, and certainly not the longevity and long lasting following the Autobots and Decepticons can boast of. As they were developed and debuted at the same time, it's unlikely either series intentionally meant to mirror the other so directly, but unfortunately for GoBots it only made comparisons easier to make, and to more easily show how the GoBots weren't as strong a creation. Is this sounding familiar yet? The good guys were the Guardians, the bad guys were the Renegades. Premiering just a few days before the original Transformers series, in September, 1984, the animated Challenge of the GoBots told the story of two warring factions of transforming robots from an alien planet, called Gobotron, whose ongoing battle comes to involve Earth. ↑ Jim Sorenson (w).The GoBots sadly lived their entire existence in the shadow of the Transformers, and this was the case for both the toy line and the cartoon that it spawned.Collision Course Comet - Robo Machine Featuring The Challenge Of GoBots.
